New York Dime Museum is built.

1883

Operated by B.F. Keith, it is located at 565 Washington Street. The first exhibit in his new venue is a “Baby Alice, the Queen of Midgets,” who is purported to be a three-week old baby weighing two pounds. Subsequent attractions include the “Fiji Mermaid,” a stuffed animal half-woman and half-fish. The place is subsequently known as Keith and Batcheller’s Mammoth Museum, Keith and Batcheller’s Gaiety Hall and Museum and the Gaiety Museum. The venue moves into stores on either side of the Bijou Theatre in August 1887.
